Public Lecture: “Diasporic and Entrepreneurial Muslims: Some Questions about Modernity”

In collaboration with Dr. Wendy Mee (School of Social Sciences, La Trobe University), I will be organising a Public Lecture, entitled “Diasporic and Entrepreneurial Muslims: Some Questions about Modernity”

There will be two speakers. The first is Dr. Filippo Osella (Senior Lecturer, Department of Anthropology, School of Social Sciences and Cultural Studies, University of Sussex) who will be speaking about “Business and Community between India and the Gulf: Muslim entrepreneurs in Kerala, India”.

The second speaker, Emeritus Professor Clive S. Kessler (Sociology & Anthropology, School of Social Sciences & International Studies, The University of New South Wales) who will speak on “‘Diasporic’ Muslims, ‘Minoritarian’ Islam and Modern Democratic Citizenship: Negotiating Accommodation and Integration”.

The lecture will take place on Wednesday 4 July 2007, from 2:00 (brief reception & light refreshment) for 2:30 to 4:30pm, at Yasuko Hiraoka Room, Level 1 of the Sidney Myer Asia Centre (Corner of Swanston St & Monash Rd), The University of Melbourne

This event is a part of a series of meetings in honour of Professor Joel S. Kahn, under whose supervision both Wendy and I separately completed our respective doctoral studies.
